Major arcana

22 cards

Twenty-two arcana: not events, but the forces that run them. When a major turns up, the question is larger than it looked.

What the majors are

The majors are what happens to a person rather than what they do: age, crisis, love, loss, a turn. They have no suit and no element because they are not about one area of life. In a reading a major almost always outweighs the minors beside it: it sets the subject, and they describe how it will show up this week.

When the majors dominate

A reading full of majors is a season nobody chose and nobody can cancel - only go through. That is not necessarily bad: falling in love looks like this, and so does a move that changes everything. The practical consequence is simple: on a spread like that, «what should I do» is the wrong question and «what is this» is the right one. A reading with no majors at all says the opposite - it is in your hands, and the stakes are lower than they feel.

The order: Fool to World

The arcana run in order, and the order is a story. The Fool leaves home knowing nothing. The Magician and the High Priestess give him will and knowledge, the Empress and the Emperor care and rules, the Hierophant tradition. The Lovers are the first real choice, the Chariot the first victory. Strength, the Hermit, the Wheel and Justice are the middle, where it all gets harder. The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, the Devil and the Tower are what breaks and recasts him. The Star, the Moon and the Sun are the light returning, from hope to clarity. Judgement draws the account and the World closes the circle. Reading a card's number as its place in that story is worth more than memorising twenty-two separate meanings.
