The Emperor

Major arcanum

Also: Major Arcanum 4

Upright

Structure is what's needed: boundaries, rules, order

Structure, boundaries, order, responsibility, authority, rules

Reversed

Rigidity where flexibility was called for

Rigidity, tyranny, absent authority, fear of it

What the card means

Upright

A frame is needed: boundaries, rules, who answers for what. Four is the number of what stands, and the card is about what holds because it was built. Freedom is not cancelled here, it becomes possible: without walls there is no door either.

Reversed

Rigidity where flexibility was called for: the rule matters more than the thing it was made for. Or the reverse - nobody answers for anything, and that is the Emperor too, simply absent.

Love and relationships

Upright

A relationship with agreements in it, and the agreements are kept. Reliability, sometimes at the cost of lightness. Often a partner who is older or steadier.

Reversed

Control instead of support. Or somebody who takes nothing on, leaving the other to hold all of it.

Work and business

Upright

Time to put things in order: dates, roles, procedure. Those above you are likelier to help than hinder. Good for anything needing discipline, poor for improvising.

Reversed

A manager who governs by fear. Or your own refusal to take the place being offered to you.

Money

Upright

A budget, records, commitments that are met. A good time for the long term: a contract, a mortgage, a plan for the year.

Reversed

Debt that is not being managed. Or meanness presented as discipline.

The card's advice

Build the frame and hold it. Decide what you do not do - that matters more than the list of what you do. And take the place if it is standing empty.

As the card of the day

A day for what needs firmness: settling something, refusing, setting a date. Everything soft and pleasant goes badly.

What is depicted

A ruler on a stone throne carved with rams' heads, armour under the robe - at peace, but not disarmed. Bare mountains behind him: ground on which nothing grows by itself.

Zodiac sign and correspondences

Aries - what begins and then holds.

Yes or no

If you are ready to answer for what follows; the card confirms rather than approves.
