The Hierophant
Major arcanumAlso: The Pope · Major Arcanum 5
Upright
Lean on tradition or someone else's experience. Ask a person who has been through it
Tradition, a teacher, rules, institutions, initiation
Reversed
The rule is being kept, the point of it is gone
Dogma, going through the motions, rebellion, your own path
What the card means
Upright
There is a proven way and it works: ask somebody who has been through it. The card is about institutions - the school, the church, the guild, the family - and about accumulated experience being cheaper than your own mistakes. Five brings the friction: tradition always pinches slightly.
Reversed
The rule is kept and the point of it is gone: the rite remains, the belief left. Or the opposite - every rule has been refused, which is not freedom either but time spent reinventing what was known.
Love and relationships
Upright
A relationship recognised from outside: marriage, engagement, meeting the family. Values line up, and that turns out to matter more than passion.
Reversed
A relationship kept up for appearances. Or a couple obstructed by other people's ideas of how it ought to be.
Work and business
Upright
Learn from somebody who can do it. A good time for a mentor, a course, procedure, certification. Do not invent your own wheel today.
Reversed
Bureaucracy the work has drowned in. Or you are right and up against “that is how it is done”.
Money
Upright
Money through an institution: a salary, a grant, a bank rather than a friend. Dependable and slow.
Reversed
Paying for the form rather than the substance. Or terms you accepted without reading.
The card's advice
Ask somebody who has done it, and do it their way at least the first time. If a rule looks pointless, find out what it protects against before breaking it.
As the card of the day
A day helped by elders, rules and the established order. Good for study and paperwork. Poor for standing out.
What is depicted
A priest between two columns, one hand raised in blessing, two pupils at his feet and two crossed keys. The keys are on the floor rather than in anyone's hands: they will be passed on, but not today.
Zodiac sign and correspondences
Taurus - what stands and is in no hurry.
Yes or no
Yes
Yes if it is done the accepted way; the card does not back the wilful version.
