The Hanged Man
Major arcanumAlso: Major Arcanum 12
Upright
A pause not of your choosing. A change of angle instead of action
A pause, a new angle, sacrifice, waiting, reappraisal
Reversed
A pause that went on long enough to become a habit
A pause gone on too long, martyrdom, treading water
What the card means
Upright
A stop you did not choose, and the way out of it is not to thrash. The world has not changed - the position you are looking at it from has, and that is the whole work of the card. He hangs willingly: the rope unties from the inside.
Reversed
The pause has become a habit: waiting is easier than deciding, and the waiting is no longer preparing anything. Or a sacrifice made visibly, with the bill presented afterwards.
Love and relationships
Upright
A relationship on a pause worth sitting in. Or a willingness to give way, not from weakness but to see it differently. Not the time to demand an answer.
Reversed
Enduring what you have no intention of changing, and calling it love. Or waiting years for somebody who promised nothing.
Work and business
Upright
The project has stalled and not through you. Reworking the approach helps more than pushing the old one. Sometimes a deliberate step back for a better position.
Reversed
Holding on to a job that stopped holding on to you. Or giving up your time so consistently that nobody notices it any more.
Money
Upright
Money frozen: a payment deferred, a deal hanging. Not a time to fuss - a time to recount.
Reversed
Put money in and have been waiting too long, explaining to yourself that it is nearly there.
The card's advice
Stop pushing. Look at it from the other end - literally: start from the finish, swap the roles, drop the condition that seemed compulsory. And decide what you are willing to give up before it gets chosen for you.
As the card of the day
A day not to force. Good for changing your mind. Poor for deadlines and for impatience.
What is depicted
A man hangs head-down from a T-shaped tree, tied by one ankle; the other leg crosses behind, hands behind his back. The face is calm, light around the head. One ankle bound and the other free: he could get down and does not.
Zodiac sign and correspondences
Neptune - what blurs the edges and is in no hurry.
Yes or no
No
Not now and not in this form: the card is asking you to reframe the question rather than answering it.
