Three cards

3 cards

Past, present, future - three cards that show a movement rather than a point.

What this spread is

The best known spread and the most underrated. Three cards give what one cannot: direction. What matters is not each card separately but where the row leads - what this grew out of, where you are now, and where it goes if nothing changes.

When to use it

When what matters is not “what now” but “what towards”. For questions about how a relationship is developing, about work that has been dragging, about a decision whose consequences are not immediately visible. It also does plain past-present-future perfectly well.

How to read it

Read left to right, and read it as one sentence. The third card is not a verdict but a continuation of the first two: it shows where what has already started will arrive. If the future is unwelcome, what needs changing is the present, not the cards.

The positions

  1. 1 Past

What this grew out of: what led to the present position and what of it is still working.

  2. 2 Present

Where you are now - and what is clearest from here.

  3. 3 Future

Where it goes if nothing changes. Not a verdict, a continuation of the first two.

Lay it out

Laid on the table from your own cards - the positions are labelled the same as here.
