Celtic Cross
10 cardsThe Celtic Cross: ten cards, a cross of six and a staff of four. The most detailed spread in the deck.
What this spread is
The classic large spread and the most quoted in the world. The ten divide in two: the cross shows the situation itself - what is happening, what lies across it, what is conscious, what is underneath, what is leaving and what is arriving; the staff to the right shows you and everything around you - how you see yourself, how others see it, what you fear and hope, and how it ends.
When to use it
When the question is large and you are prepared to read for a while. For important decisions, for positions that have gone on, and for when a short spread already gave the answer and did not explain it. Not for yes-or-no and not for small things: asked something simple, ten cards answer with noise.
How to read it
Read it in two parts. The cross entire first: the first and second together (what is happening and what is across it), then the vertical, then the horizontal of time. Then the staff from the bottom up - from yourself to the outcome. And only then look at the tenth beside the first: an outcome is always read together with what it started from.
The positions
-
1
Present
The substance of the position: what is actually happening.
-
2
The challenge
What lies across it - an obstacle, or more rarely a help you have mistaken for one.
-
3
Crown
The conscious: the aim, the intention, what you think about it.
-
4
Root
The foundation: what it grew out of, and what works below your attention.
-
5
Past
What is leaving - the recent thing whose influence is ending.
-
6
Future
What is arriving in the near term: the turn already being prepared.
-
7
Yourself
Yourself: how you are holding in this and how you see yourself in it.
-
8
Environment
The surroundings: the people and circumstances around it, and how they regard it.
-
9
Hopes & fears
Hopes and fears - one card for both, because they are usually the same thing.
-
10
Outcome
The outcome as things stand. Read together with the first card, not instead of it.
Laid on the table from your own cards - the positions are labelled the same as here.
